Mastering the nomenclature of alkanes and drawing their structures are among the most challenging concepts in organic chemistry for pre-diploma students. These concepts require students to apply the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) nomenclature rules and accurately visualise molecular structures. However, conventional teaching approaches often provide limited opportunities for active and interactive learning, leading to low engagement, reduced motivation, and limited confidence in applying these concepts. To address these challenges, Virtual Organic Chemistry Learning: Alkanes Quest was developed to provide an engaging, student-centred learning experience that enhances students' understanding on the nomenclature and structure of alkanes. The game was designed and developed using the ADDIE instructional design model and incorporates a laboratory-themed escape game storyline. It comprises three levels covering the naming and drawing of branched alkanes with one and multiple substituents. Developed as a web-based learning application using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, the game is integrated into the Chemistry for Pre-Diploma II (CHM012) Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the UFUTURE learning platform. The novelty of Alkanes Quest lies in its structured step-by-step instructional framework, which transforms the IUPAC nomenclature rules into an engaging escape game experience through guided challenges, immediate feedback, and progressive learning. This innovation is expected to enhance students' conceptual understanding, confidence, motivation, and overall learning experience, making organic chemistry more enjoyable. Furthermore, Alkanes Quest offers commercialisation potential as a web-based educational product that can be expanded for other homologous series and integrated into digital learning platforms to support STEM education.
