B131: INNOVATIVE TEACHING APPROACHES FOR COLD AND HOT WATER SYSTEMS IN HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS FOR QUANTITY SURVEYING EDUCATION

The cold and hot water system is an important building service that provides a continuous supply of clean water, hot water, and proper wastewater disposal in high-rise buildings. As more high-rise developments are being constructed, it is important for Quantity Surveying students to understand how these systems operate because they are closely related to construction costs, maintenance, and building performance. However, students often find it difficult to understand the arrangement and operation of the system as it is usually taught through lectures and technical drawings only. This makes it challenging for them to visualise how each component works together in an actual building. Therefore, this project aims to develop a cross-sectional educational model that provides a clearer and more practical way of learning the cold and hot water system in a high-rise building. The model shows the main components of the system, such as the underground water tank, pump set, overhead water tank, water heater, cold and hot water risers, drainage pipes, and vent pipes. Different colours and arrows are also used to show the direction of water flow, making the system easier to understand. This learning aid helps students identify the function of each component and understand how the entire system is connected. Besides supporting teaching and learning in universities, the model can also be used in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, training centres, and industry workshops. It also has the potential to be commercialised as an educational model for teaching building services and could benefit educational institutions and organisations involved in the construction industry. Overall, this project provides a simple and effective learning tool that helps students gain a better understanding of cold and hot water systems in high-rise buildings.
