The teaching and learning of financial reporting standards can be challenging due to the technical nature of accounting concepts and the difficulty students face in applying standards to practical scenarios. This innovation introduces the PropertyQuest Game App, an interactive gamified learning tool designed to support students’ understanding of MFRS 140 Investment Property. The application is integrated with video-based learning materials to create a more engaging, flexible, and student-centred learning experience.
This innovation combines short video tutorials with game-based activities, allowing students to first understand key concepts through visual explanations and then apply their knowledge through interactive challenges. The gamified elements encourage active participation, immediate feedback, and repeated practice, while the video content helps simplify complex areas of MFRS 140, including recognition, measurement, classification, and disclosure requirements.
Feedback from students indicates that the combination of gamification and video-based learning improves motivation, engagement, and comprehension. Students found the multimedia approach more meaningful compared to conventional learning methods, as it enabled them to learn at their own pace while reinforcing their understanding through practical application. The innovation also supports different learning styles by integrating visual, interactive, and self-directed learning strategies.
The PropertyQuest Game App demonstrates strong potential as an alternative teaching aid in accounting education. It enhances the learning process by making technical financial reporting content more accessible, enjoyable, and effective. This innovation may also be adapted for other Malaysian Financial Reporting Standards and related accounting subjects, contributing to more innovative, inclusive, and technology-driven teaching and learning practices in higher education.
