Function graphing is an important topic for mathematics students, particularly when advancing into higher mathematics or fields such as engineering, medical and economics. However, learning to graph functions remains challenging for many undergraduate students in this century. The conventional instruction treats graphing as a sequence of isolated, mechanical steps rather than a unified, visual concept; thus, many students struggle to comprehend the concepts underlying defined functions. An innovative learning approach called AI-Guided Concept Gateway for Graphing Functions (AI-GF) is proposed to address the difficulty. The AI-GF aims to increase learning by engaging with AI chatbot prompts designed to elicit meaningful conceptual reasoning regarding relations, functions, domain and range constraints, thereby enhancing visualization skills by strategically setting up tables of values to translate function into 2D graphs. An experiment was employed on the treatment group to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-GF. During the lesson, the concepts of defined functions were introduced using the AI-GF according to lesson plan. The results from the experiment show that the treatment group, which employed the AI-GF, had a mean score that was 23.31% higher than that of the control group. The treatment group also outperformed the control group across diverse learning outcomes. The feedback regarding learning experience with the AI-GF from students is positive. The AI-GF provided benefits of extra knowledge that have greatly enhanced students’ understanding of the topics learned, while also increasing their enjoyment during the learning process.
