Visualisation Techniques for Teaching Water Reticulation Systems in Quantity Surveying Education

The Water Reticulation System is a key aspect of the building services and entails the process of distributing safe, pressurised potable water from the mains to the end-user within a building. However, despite being an integral part of the building services system, traditional teaching approaches tend to involve very technical illustrations and lectures, resulting in a lack of involvement and comprehension among learners. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a hands-on teaching model that aims to create an interactive teaching aid to facilitate learning of concepts related to the design of indirect and direct water distribution systems, among other important aspects of water reticulation. The aim of this project is to provide an interactive way for students to comprehend the processes involved in designing and managing the water distribution system through provision of a hands-on product that incorporates dynamic visualisations, pipe size calculations, and flow simulations. The application of this teaching tool shows much better performance by students in learning, skill acquisition, and efficiency in solving problems related to plumbing design standards. In summary, the use of teaching tools in the building services course brings theory Abstractught in academic institutions closer to reality.
