A21: The 3-Phase Gamified Sustainable Operations Learning (GSOL) Model: Transforming Operations Management Education Through Gamification And Sustainability

DR MARIAM SETAPA Universiti Teknologi MARA Kelantan Branch

The 3-Phase Gamified Sustainable Operations Learning (GSOL) Model is an innovative teaching and learning framework designed to address low student engagement and limited sustainability integration in Operations Management education. Traditional lecture-based approaches often restrict students’ ability to connect theoretical concepts with real-world operational challenges, resulting in passive learning experiences and limited development of critical thinking and sustainability competencies. To overcome these challenges, the GSOL Model integrates gamification principles and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within a structured three-phase framework comprising Knowledge Foundation, Gamified Task Execution, and Competitive Showcase. Students apply Operations Management tools such as facility layout planning and PERT/CPM scheduling through a real-world case simulation known as the Ops Challenge – Kelantan Snack Factory Expansion. The model incorporates team-based problem solving, competition, rewards, and sustainability-oriented decision making to create an engaging and experiential learning environment. The innovation was implemented among approximately 300 diploma students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), involving 14 competing groups. Findings demonstrated enhanced student engagement, teamwork, systems thinking, sustainability awareness, and practical application of Operations Management concepts. The model also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The GSOL Model has been published in the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science (IJRISS) and has obtained copyright protection from the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) under Notification Number CRLY2026E03772. Its scalability enables adaptation across disciplines, institutions, and professional training environments. Furthermore, the model possesses commercialization potential through the development of educational toolkits, instructor modules, and digital gamified learning platforms.
