A79: I-ENGINE FRAMEWORK: Islamic Engineering Nurturing Framework For Holistic Professional Engineers

The field of engineering is increasingly challenged to address complex global issues while upholding the highest standards of ethics, sustainability, and social responsibility. Meeting these demands requires engineering education to move beyond the development of technical competencies and place greater emphasis on the holistic development of engineers, including their character, values, and spiritual foundation. In response to this need, this conceptual paper proposes the I-ENGINE Framework (Islamic Engineering Nurturing Framework for Holistic Professional Engineers) as a comprehensive framework for nurturing technically competent, ethically grounded, and spiritually conscious professional engineers. The framework is based on the Islamic worldview (Tawhid) and aligned with Maqasid al-Shariah principles that make Mardhatillah (seeking Allah’s pleasure) the main goal of engineering education and practice. The framework consists of six interlinked components, including (1) Ultimate Purpose, (2) Tawhidic Foundation, (3) I-ENGINE Core Principles, (4) Spiritual and Professional Development Pathway, (5) Engineering Learning Ecosystem, and (6) Holistic Muslim Professional Engineer Outcomes. The combination of all these elements allows for fostering engineers who have both high technical skills and strong Islamic values. This framework provides a comprehensive approach for engineering educational institutions to enhance curriculum development and graduate attributes while facilitating sustainable engineering practice and the welfare of society within the Islamic context.
