A133: INT-FRAME: A Self-Checking Learning Board For Interest Concepts

Understanding the fundamental interest concepts in Business Mathematics is important before students can solve interest-related questions. However, many students struggle to distinguish between simple and compound interest concepts and to choose the right formulas when solving interest-related problems, often leading to misconceptions and errors in problem solving. Traditional teaching methods, however, usually involve lectures and worksheet-based tutorials, resulting in delayed feedback on students' misconceptions and errors. To break this educational barrier, an interactive, gamified intervention is needed to make mathematics accessible and less intimidating. INT-FRAME, a self-checking learning board, was designed to tackle this challenge. The main objective is to develop a fun, interactive and interesting game tool intended to enhance students' conceptual understanding of business mathematics related to simple and compound interest, and to investigate students' perceptions of INT-FRAME in terms of its usability, engagement and effectiveness. A learning experience survey was conducted with 29 diploma students to evaluate the effectiveness of INT-FRAME as a learning tool. The results demonstrated positive perceptions among the students towards the usability, engagement and effectiveness of INT-FRAME in supporting conceptual learning. This innovation displays strong potential as an interactive teaching aid and can be adapted for use in a variety of mathematics topics.
