B135: Battle In The Land Of Numbers: A Gamified Approach To Learning Radicals

Battle in the Land of Numbers is an innovative educational board game designed to enhance students' understanding of radicals through interactive, game-based learning. Developed in response to the common challenges secondary school students face when learning radicals, the game transforms abstract mathematical concepts into an engaging and collaborative learning experience.

Inspired by the familiar mechanics of Snakes and Ladders, the game incorporates specially designed mathematical challenges that require players to perform operations involving radicals, including multiplication, division, and squaring. Players move across the board using a customized dice that introduces both positive and negative movements, adding strategic thinking to the gameplay. Action spaces prompt students to solve radical expressions before advancing, reinforcing conceptual understanding and computational skills. A reusable calculation pad and reference guide support active problem-solving while encouraging independent learning and constructive peer discussion.

The game has been piloted among Form 3 students who had completed the topic, as well as Form 1 and Form 2 students with limited prior knowledge. Feedback demonstrated that students were able to quickly grasp the game mechanics, actively engage with mathematical concepts, and develop greater confidence in solving radical problems. The competitive yet collaborative environment also promoted critical thinking, communication, and sustained interest in mathematics.

By integrating gamification into mathematics education, Battle in the Land of Numbers serves as an effective supplementary teaching and revision tool that enhances learning outcomes while making mathematics more enjoyable. The innovation also provides a scalable framework for developing similar board games covering other challenging mathematical topics.
