In recent times, educational practices have been transformed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), thus, creating new possibilities for foreign language learning and teaching. However, there are yet to be a standard guideline on how to utilize AI in assisting language acquisition, namely for Japanese language in Malaysian tertiary level education. This results in language learners fully utilizing AI to complete their learning task without developing any language skills. Thus, the “AI-Assisted Writing Guidelines for CEFR A1 Japanese Language Learners Based on MARUGOTO Katsudoo A1” also known as AI-kaku is introduced. This innovation project introduces the guideline for Japanese language learners on how to use AI for their Japanese language learning appropriately. It is a practical framework created to assist CEFR A1 Japanese language learners to develop their Japanese writing skills, at the same time, encouraging responsible as well as ethical use of AI. This guideline aims to aid Japanese language beginner who has limited vocabulary, having trouble constructing sentences and in-need of quick feedback when not in the classroom. This guideline utilized and aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) A1 descriptors and integrates the steps within structured writing which consist of planning, drafting, AI-assisted feedback, revision, and reflection. Japanese language learners are required to produce their own writing before utilizing AI. In this guideline, AI is viewed as a Japanese language supporting tool to check grammar, recommend appropriate vocabulary, comment on sentences and have self-reflection. The guideline also highlights that AI should assist language learning instead of completing language assignment. This innovation allows foreign language learning to develop by providing an accessible as well as pedagogically sound framework to incorporate AI into Japanese language beginner-level writing guideline.
