ViEducate is an innovative teaching and learning approach that integrates video-based learning with experiential exploration to enhance student engagement and understanding. This initiative combines “video” and “educate” to form a structured activity where students are required to transform theoretical knowledge gained from lectures into practical, visual learning outputs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the ViEducate approach in Built Environment education. After classroom instruction, students are assigned to explore real-life applications within their university environment. They identify and document relevant examples related to the subject matter, such as building services systems. For instance, in topics related to fire safety, students may investigate and record active fire protection systems (e.g., fire alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers) as well as passive fire protection elements (e.g., fire-rated doors, compartmentation, emergency exits) found within university buildings. The collected findings are then curated into short educational videos that explain and demonstrate the identified concepts. These videos are presented in class and shared with lecturers and peers, promoting collaborative learning, peer instruction, and reflective discussion. ViEducate encourages active learning, critical thinking and creativity by bridging theoretical concepts with real-world observation. It also strengthens students’ communication skills and digital literacy while fostering deeper conceptual understanding through self-directed exploration. Overall, this approach reimagines traditional assessment by turning the learning environment itself into an interactive educational resource.
